Small Groups FAQ

Small Groups bring together a smaller number of people (we suggest no more than 12) that meet on a regular schedule (no less than twice a month, some meet weekly), to not only build deeper community but also study the Bible and grow in faith.
Small Groups typically, though not exclusively, meet in homes. Joining a Small Group is an important step in getting more connected to the people and ministry of MCC.
MCC Small Groups FAQ
What is the Vision for Small Groups at MCC?
In a word, transformation.
Although there are many different kinds of small groups, and though small groups vary in their focus and intensity, each small group experience is an opportunity to grow closer to Jesus and to others. As people of faith, we are on a journey to become more like Jesus and the small group ministry of MCC seeks to provide opportunities for that to happen in your life.
How do I Join a Small Group?
At MCC Small Group Ministry includes three different types of groups (you can read more about these in our Overview of Small Groups).
Volunteer Groups are task and service oriented and always open for your participation. Please email Monica Mulder if you are interested in joining a volunteer group.
Small Groups are focused on community building and growing in our faith. We onboard people into Small Groups two times a year, in September and in January. Please email Pastor Jim if you are interested in joining a Small Group.
Triads offer a deep dive into prayer and study and offer what we think can be the most impactful small group experience at MCC. These are formed organically. Please email Pastor Jim if you are interested in joining a Triad.
Where and when do Small Groups meet?
Different groups will meet at different times and at different places. This is because each Small Group is a little unique and finding a time that works for your group is what matters. When new Small Groups form here at MCC the first challenge is to find that meeting time and plan the meeting schedule.
How often do Small Groups meet?
Again, this will vary from group to group. We have some groups meeting weekly at MCC. We have other groups that meet every other week. We do recommend that our Small Groups meet at least every other week. When a Small Group meets only once a month, and you miss a meeting, it is quite a long time before you will see one another again.
How long are Life Groups expected to stay together?
Again, this will vary from group to group. We ask that each Small Group stay together to finish each book study or curriculum together at a minimum. But we suspect that for many of us, such a season together will feel like the group is only getting started. We recommend you check in as a group twice a year. We think of both the month of August and the month of December as good times to do this. Since we form new groups and onboard people in September and January, August and December are good offboarding months. Life changes for people, we are convinced that healthy groups will recognize this and allow for people to graciously exit.
Do small groups take breaks?
Yes, they do. Some groups will find scheduling during the summer a big challenge. Holidays also have a way of impacting meeting schedules. Please be flexible and take time to discuss the schedule with your fellow small group members.
Are children welcome at small groups meetings?
Sure, but that should be agreed upon by the group. We have some small groups that have agreed to get sitters when they meet. We have others who desire to meet with their children present. MCC wants to support those with small children.
